How are fuel prices set in South Africa?
Petrol prices are regulated by the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources (DMPR) and adjusted once a month, taking effect on the first Wednesday. The price you pay is built up from the international product price, the rand/dollar exchange rate, taxes and levies, and retail margins. That mix is why prices can change noticeably from month to month.
Why do coastal and inland prices differ?
Fuel lands at coastal ports, so inland regions like Gauteng pay a transport premium to cover the cost of moving fuel from the coast. That's why Gauteng prices are consistently higher than coastal prices, and why Gauteng also stocks 93-octane fuel, which suits the highveld's altitude.
Why are diesel prices "deregulated"?
Unlike petrol, only the wholesale price of diesel is regulated, so retailers set their own pump price. The diesel prices shown here are the official wholesale reference prices, so the price at your local station may differ slightly.
